Training Sessions

Prior to use, __Space.URI requires training for the Large Format Printer and the Laser Engraver/Cutter. We must have at least two people to run a training session. Please see our calendar (link) to register.

Laser Engraver/Cutter

The __Space.URI Laser Engraver/Cutter is a GCC LaserPro Spirit LS. It is a shared resource offering the University Community the ability to work with a piece of common fabrication equipment in a supportive academic atmosphere. We ask potential users to realize they are responsible for any works made with the machine, at no point will __Space.URI staff be expected to create or run any project. We are unable to assist in the design process at this time.

Safety training is required for ANY potential user (faculty/staff/student) prior to using the Laser Engraver/Cutter. Training will be performed by a __Space.URI employee skilled with the equipment and software (CorelDraw x7). This training will provide an overview of the machine, safety, and running a sample project. Once training is successfully completed users will be able to schedule time on the machine during __Space.URI hours.

Instruction lasts approximately one hour covering questions and running sample projects. Material for this session will be heavyweight paper. For approved materials for personal projects see the Laser Etching wiki.

Large Format Printer

The __Space.URI Large Format 3D printer is a 3DP 3D Platform. It is a shared resource offering the University Community the ability to create physical representations of digital objects on a scale larger than a desktop printer.

Due to the knowledge, time, and materials necessary to run large jobs potential users (faculty/staff/student) wishing to use the 3DP must attending training. All projects utilizing the 3DP will be reviewed by __Space.URI staff and may be subject to additional requirements (ie. practice run at smaller scale, modification of infill/support settings, ect.). Large prints are time intensive, users are required to monitor the first two hours of their print. Jobs taking over 24 hours will require additional staff review/consult and increased attention of the user.

Training will be performed by a __Space.URI employee skilled with the equipment and software (Simplify3D). This hour long training will provide an overview of the machine and safety. Once training is successfully completed users will be able to schedule time on the machine during __Space.URI hours.

We ask potential users to realize that the 3DP requires a substantial level of planning and expertise to use effectively. Design integrity, ensuring proper first layers and close monitoring of the run are instrumental in obtaining a successful print. __Space.URI staff will assist with machine use but are not responsible for project outcomes. We are unable to assist in the design process at this time.
